The Problem

You know how to talk to people. You do it all day. Then the stakes go up, in a job interview or a conversation you have been dreading, and your attention turns inward. How am I coming across? Did that sound stupid?

The more you monitor yourself, the less attention is left over for the room you are standing in. You stop hearing what people actually say. The ability is still there; you just cannot reach it.

Build the Room starts with a simple idea: when the thing that matters is outside you, your attention should be too.

How It Works

The system follows a simple progression. First you understand why attention collapses inward when stakes rise. Then you practise directing it outward in low-pressure situations, so the habit exists before you need it. When the moment comes, you run the same process on the interaction in front of you, and the switch happens on its own.

There are no affirmations to recite and no confidence to force. Confidence turns up by itself once your attention is somewhere useful. From there, the book teaches you what to do with the attention you have freed: how to read a room, follow what is actually happening in it, and use what you notice, whether that is on a stage, in a meeting or across an interview table.

The Transformation

I came to mentalism at 30, with a fear of performing that was close to paralysing. The first time the switch worked, I was at a Scout camp at night, in front of about a hundred tired children. I kept them engaged for forty-five minutes, and what struck me afterwards was not that I got through it. It was that I had not been fighting myself while I did.

The change followed me off stage. These days I can pick up the phone and call a stranger, or walk into a conversation I would once have spent all morning dreading. The rooms are as hard as they ever were; what I bring into them is different. This book is that change, written down as a system anyone can practise.

Why This Is Different

Most advice works from the outside in: fix your body language, memorise the right opening lines, act more confident than you feel. Now you are managing a performance on top of managing yourself, with less attention left for either.

Build the Room works the other way. Instead of teaching you to act confident, it clears away the learned habits that block the ability you already have, so you can be genuinely present in whatever room you find yourself in. A boardroom, a stage, a first date, a family dinner: the same principles hold in all of them.

What You'll Get

The complete system in one book: the understanding, the exercises and the practical processes to apply it anywhere. You will practise directing attention outward, keeping your thinking available under pressure, and handling difficult interactions without becoming someone you are not.

None of it is a list of tips to recall while nervous. With practice the system runs on its own, which is the point.

Matt Overd seated in an armchair. About the author: mentalist, author, speaker.

Matt Overd is a mentalist and corporate speaker from Adelaide, Australia. He came to magic and mentalism at 30, carrying a stage fear strong enough to stop him performing at all.

Build the Room is the system he developed to fix that, written down so other people can use it.
